SUMMARY:Nature Poetry Workshop at Owl's Hill
DESCRIPTION:August 12\, September 16\, and October 14\n9 am – Noon\n$45 per workshop or $120 for the 3-class series (each workshop can be taken independently) \nJoin us once a month to read and write poems that respond and engage with nature. During our time together\, we will look closely at several examples of nature poetry and discuss the nuts and bolts of how such poems are crafted. We will also think about why the poet chose to consider certain specific elements of the natural world to be included in their work. Once we read a few poems for inspiration and guidance\, we will then let the beautiful surroundings of Owl’s Hill Nature Preserve be our further motivation and personal muse by trying our own hand at writing poems. I will offer prompts to help encourage our creative process. \nThis workshop will be one that might generate full or maybe just the beginnings of poems. The organization of the class will be as such: discuss poems\, split up to write our own poems\, come back together to share what we came up with. By encouraging each other’s drafts\, I hope we will all walk away with the potential for a strong\, nature-inspired poem. \nWhat to bring: \nPaper: in the form of a journal or a notebook.\nWriting implement: a pen\, pencil\, (maybe bring more than one just in case).\nOutdoor clothing and shoes: I will encourage you to explore the grounds around Owl’s Hill\, so you should wear the proper clothing and shoes to do so.\nSunscreen and/or insect repellent.\nA lunch or snacks in case you get hungry.\nWater. \nPlease plan to arrive early enough to park and to get settled in.

We are a pack-in/pack-out facility.\nJoin us as we explore Owl’s Hill at sunset and enjoy the sights and sounds of day turning to night. We’ll listen for owls\, coyotes\, and night-singing insects. As the stars come out\, we’ll look for constellations\, planets\, and even meteors. \nMeet our non-releasable owl ambassadors and learn about the adaptations that help nocturnal animals survive. Find out what we can expect to see in the sky that night. After that\, we’ll head out on the trail to look and listen for the wonders of the night. No flashlights\, please! \nOwl Prowl programs include an easy one-mile hike with some gentle uphill and downhill hiking. Our trails are natural surface\, and hikers can expect a few spots with uneven terrain. Wear shoes suitable for hiking. Insect repellent is strongly recommended.

They will be joined by County Health Department Director Cathy Montgomery and Lyndsey Wilhelm of the Williamson Prevention Coalition\, as well as recovery advocate Jason Wahler to discuss the launch of the new Williamson Prevention Coalition.\nBreakfast With the Mayors is presented by our co-presenting partners\, Pinnacle Financial Partners and Gresham Smith. Each year thousands of Americans\, like you\, are saying “Yes” to saving the life of a friend\, colleague\, sibling\, or neighbor.\nGatekeepers can be anyone\, but include parents\, friends\, neighbors\, teachers\, ministers\, doctors\, nurses\, office supervisors\, squad leaders\, foremen\, police officers\, advisors\, caseworkers\, firefighters\, and many others who are strategically positioned to recognize and refer someone at risk of suicide.\nThe classes are planned for July 10\, July 19\, and July 24. Program begins promptly at noted time. No late entries. No exceptions. \nPack dinner and arrive early to picnic on the grounds. We are a pack-in/pack-out facility. \nThis evening program is designed to introduce young explorers to the wonders of the natural world after dark. Find out what makes owls such good hunters\, why a firefly lights up\, and how your vision changes in the dark. Meet our owl ambassadors\, listen for night sounds\, and keep an eye out for nocturnal creatures as we go on a kid-friendly hike through the meadow and orchard. \nThis program includes an easy hike over mostly flat ground. Our trails are natural surface and hikers can expect a few spots with uneven terrain. Wear shoes suitable for hiking. Insect repellent is strongly recommended. This program is open to participants ages 4 and up.

YLC offers an immersive 11-week training program designed to appeal to emerging leaders in our community. Since 1985\, YLC has trained more than 3\,000 young professionals to effectively serve on the boards of more than 400 local nonprofit agencies. Currently\, we offer training annually through the Nashville Spring; Junior League of Nashville; Massey College of Business at Belmont University; Nashville Fall; and Williamson County Cohorts. Through partnerships with local nonprofit agencies\, each YLC participant is uniquely challenged throughout the semester to identify their passions and connect with organizations whose purpose and work aligns with their passion to further improve our community. \nYLC is accepting applications for the Fall 2023 Williamson County Cohort\, for those who live or work in Williamson County.
