SUMMARY:Nature Poetry Workshop at Owl's Hill
DESCRIPTION:August 12\, September 16\, and October 14\n9 am – Noon\n$45 per workshop or $120 for the 3-class series (each workshop can be taken independently) \nJoin us once a month to read and write poems that respond and engage with nature. During our time together\, we will look closely at several examples of nature poetry and discuss the nuts and bolts of how such poems are crafted. We will also think about why the poet chose to consider certain specific elements of the natural world to be included in their work. Once we read a few poems for inspiration and guidance\, we will then let the beautiful surroundings of Owl’s Hill Nature Preserve be our further motivation and personal muse by trying our own hand at writing poems. I will offer prompts to help encourage our creative process. \nThis workshop will be one that might generate full or maybe just the beginnings of poems. The organization of the class will be as such: discuss poems\, split up to write our own poems\, come back together to share what we came up with. By encouraging each other’s drafts\, I hope we will all walk away with the potential for a strong\, nature-inspired poem. \nWhat to bring: \nPaper: in the form of a journal or a notebook.\nWriting implement: a pen\, pencil\, (maybe bring more than one just in case).\nOutdoor clothing and shoes: I will encourage you to explore the grounds around Owl’s Hill\, so you should wear the proper clothing and shoes to do so.\nSunscreen and/or insect repellent.\nA lunch or snacks in case you get hungry.\nWater. \nPlease plan to arrive early enough to park and to get settled in.

DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June 3\, 2023\n9 am – 12 pm\nCost: $10 Adult (ages 13+)\, $8 Child (ages 12-5) Children 4 & under free \nCome to Owl’s Hill for a day of family fun and exploration! Geocaches are hidden in containers that can be found using a GPS or smartphone. Head out on our kid-friendly course set up with caches ready to be found. (We’ll also have a couple more challenging caches for anyone looking for extra adventure.) Hike around in the woods and see what you can find. No experience necessary! \nBring your own GPS device or use your smartphone with Google Maps installed to find the caches. Participants are welcome to bring tradeables (small toys or trinkets) to leave or exchange in caches. \nCheck in between 9 am and 12 pm. Trails are open for geocaching until 3 pm. The gate closes promptly at 3 pm.

DESCRIPTION:Strawberry Moon: June 2\nBuck Moon: July 7\nSturgeon Moon: August 4 \nAll Hikes: 7:30 – 9 pm\n$15/person\nAge 12+ (minors must be accompanied by an adult) \nGate opens 1 hour before program start. Program begins promptly at 7:30. No late entries. No exceptions. \nPack dinner and arrive early to picnic on the grounds. We are a pack-in/pack-out facility.\nJoin us as we explore Owl’s Hill at sunset and enjoy the sights and sounds of day turning to night. We’ll listen for owls\, coyotes\, and night-singing insects. As the stars come out\, we’ll look for constellations\, planets\, and even meteors. \nMeet our non-releasable owl ambassadors and learn about the adaptations that help nocturnal animals survive. Find out what we can expect to see in the sky that night. After that\, we’ll head out on the trail to look and listen for the wonders of the night. No flashlights\, please! \nOwl Prowl programs include an easy one-mile hike with some gentle uphill and downhill hiking. Our trails are natural surface\, and hikers can expect a few spots with uneven terrain. Wear shoes suitable for hiking. Insect repellent is strongly recommended.

SUMMARY:Creative Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:April 29\, May 20\, and June 24\, 2023\n9:30am – Noon\n$45 per workshop or $120 for all 3 (each workshop can be taken independently) \nThis morning workshop offers an opportunity for those who love nature\, writing\, and creativity to come together and pursue all three in a small group setting (10 person maximum). Facilitated in the Amherst Writers & Artists method\, this workshop is designed to nurture the inherent creative abilities of every participant. Are you curious about writing in nature or about nature? Do you regularly journal or keep a blog? Do you write professionally? Has it been years since picking up a pen? Do you want to create a writing practice for yourself? \nWith nature as our inspiration and subject\, we’ll write to at least three prompts with an opportunity to share with the group. This is not a critique workshop. When words are brand new on the page\, we do not edit or perfect. We respond with what resonated in a strong way and what we remember. We’ll discuss the AWA philosophy and practices at the beginning of each workshop\, and encourage participants to learn more here: Philosophy and Practices ⋆ Amherst Writers & Artists \nWhat to bring:\nNotebook and pen\, journal and colored pencils\, laptop — your choice!\nOptional: A sack lunch to enjoy following the workshop\, as well as comfortable shoes\, sunscreen\, and insect repellent to explore the trails at Owl’s Hill. \nPlease plan to arrive by 9:15am to park\, get settled in our space\, and prepare to begin the workshop on time.
