SUMMARY:Nature Poetry Workshop at Owl's Hill
DESCRIPTION:August 12\, September 16\, and October 14\n9 am – Noon\n$45 per workshop or $120 for the 3-class series (each workshop can be taken independently) \nJoin us once a month to read and write poems that respond and engage with nature. During our time together\, we will look closely at several examples of nature poetry and discuss the nuts and bolts of how such poems are crafted. We will also think about why the poet chose to consider certain specific elements of the natural world to be included in their work. Once we read a few poems for inspiration and guidance\, we will then let the beautiful surroundings of Owl’s Hill Nature Preserve be our further motivation and personal muse by trying our own hand at writing poems. I will offer prompts to help encourage our creative process. \nThis workshop will be one that might generate full or maybe just the beginnings of poems. The organization of the class will be as such: discuss poems\, split up to write our own poems\, come back together to share what we came up with. By encouraging each other’s drafts\, I hope we will all walk away with the potential for a strong\, nature-inspired poem. \nWhat to bring: \nPaper: in the form of a journal or a notebook.\nWriting implement: a pen\, pencil\, (maybe bring more than one just in case).\nOutdoor clothing and shoes: I will encourage you to explore the grounds around Owl’s Hill\, so you should wear the proper clothing and shoes to do so.\nSunscreen and/or insect repellent.\nA lunch or snacks in case you get hungry.\nWater. \nPlease plan to arrive early enough to park and to get settled in.

DESCRIPTION:Autumn Lantern Hike\nFriday\, September 29\, 2023\n7 – 9 pm \nCost: $18 / person\nAges 12+. Minors must be accompanied by an adult. \nGate opens 30 minutes before program start. Program begins promptly at noted time. No late entires. No exceptions. \nPack dinner and arrive early to picnic on the grounds. We are a pack-in/pack-out facility – please plan to take your trash with you. \nCome along on a nightime adventure! We’ll explore the woods at night by lantern light\, listen for the sounds of nocturnal animals and share stories about the history of Owl’s Hill. \nThis program is for adventurers who are looking for a longer hike than our typical evening programs. The route is 1.5 miles of moderately challenging natural surface trail. Participants can expect moderate uphill and downhill hiking as well as areas of uneven terrain. Once the hike departs\, participants are expected to stay with the group for the duration of the hike. \nClosed-toe shoes suitable for hiking are strongly recommended. \nFor the safety and comfort of all participants\, participants are not permitted to carry additional sources of light (headlamps\, flashlights\, etc). Lanterns will be provided.

Find out what we can expect to see in the sky that night. After that\, we’ll head out on the trail to look and listen for the wonders of the night. No flashlights\, please! \nOwl Prowl programs include an easy one-mile hike with some gentle uphill and downhill hiking. We are a pack-in/pack-out facility. \nThis evening program is designed to introduce young explorers to the wonders of the natural world after dark. Find out what makes owls such good hunters\, why a firefly lights up\, and how your vision changes in the dark. Meet our owl ambassadors\, listen for night sounds\, and keep an eye out for nocturnal creatures as we go on a kid-friendly hike through the meadow and orchard. \nThis program includes an easy hike over mostly flat ground. Our trails are natural surface and hikers can expect a few spots with uneven terrain. Wear shoes suitable for hiking. Insect repellent is strongly recommended. This program is open to participants ages 4 and up.

DESCRIPTION:Strawberry Moon: June 2\nBuck Moon: July 7\nSturgeon Moon: August 4 \nAll Hikes: 7:30 – 9 pm\n$15/person\nAge 12+ (minors must be accompanied by an adult) \nGate opens 1 hour before program start. Program begins promptly at 7:30. No late entries. No exceptions. \nPack dinner and arrive early to picnic on the grounds. We are a pack-in/pack-out facility.\nJoin us as we explore Owl’s Hill at sunset and enjoy the sights and sounds of day turning to night. We’ll listen for owls\, coyotes\, and night-singing insects. As the stars come out\, we’ll look for constellations\, planets\, and even meteors. \nMeet our non-releasable owl ambassadors and learn about the adaptations that help nocturnal animals survive. Find out what we can expect to see in the sky that night. After that\, we’ll head out on the trail to look and listen for the wonders of the night. No flashlights\, please! \nOwl Prowl programs include an easy one-mile hike with some gentle uphill and downhill hiking.
