A Ravenwood 12th grader is turning his serious medical challenge into an opportunity to help other young people. When it was time for the Williamson Co. student, Jordan Johnson, who is taking a class at the Entrepreneurship & Innovation Center, to decide on what business to start, he wanted to focus on learning how to start a nonprofit to help other pediatric patients like himself. So, as part of Jordan’s prototyping process, he is heading up an event called the Walk With Us 5K. Proceeds from the event will go towards his goal of raising $175,000 for a Rise&Walk neurorehabilitation machine, which will be donated to Monroe Carroll Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. Jordan’s story began just before his freshman year when he was hit in the head with a baseball while participating on a travel baseball team. To his and his family’s surprise, the hospital scans revealed a brain lesion that was probably there since birth. After an 8 hour surgery to remove the growth, Jordan had to relearn everything, including how to walk again. Still wheelchair-bound following three years of rehabilitation, he received therapy on the Rise&Walk neurorehabilitation machine – within three weeks, he was walking again. Since this machine is not available at many pediatric facilities, Jordan is passionate about providing more children and teens access to this life-changing device. A Student Project Supported by the Williamson County School Entrepreneurship & Innovation Center The Walk With Us 5K will be held at 8am on April 6th at the Entrepreneurship & Innovation Center at 104 Claude Yates Dr Franklin, TN 374064. Community sponsors for the event are the primary source of funding; all race proceeds will go directly to the purchase of the Rise&Walk machine.
