Brentwood, Spring Hill, Nolensville, Fairview and Franklin all were at the top of a new list of Tennesee’s safest cities.

A financial services web site called CreditDonkey used the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report data for 2014 to help formulate the rankings. The study is based violent and property crime report information for Tennessee cities with a population of at least 5,000.

Thompson’s Station, the only incorporated city in the county with less than 3,000, did not make the study cutoff.

Violent crime is defined as:

  • Murder
  • Rape
  • Robbery
  • Aggravated assault

Property crime is defined as:

  • Burglary
  • Larceny
  • Motor vehicle theft
  • Arson

Signal Mountain, a suburb of Chattanooga, ranked as Tennessee’s number one safest city.

Brentwood was number two, Spring Hill ranked fourth and Nolensville was fifth. Fairview came out as No. 10 and Franklin was 11th, just a little better than Hendersonville.

The CreditDonkey reported noted that, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the number of criminal offenses reported to law enforcement decreased by 5% between 2014 and 2015, with a total of approximately 342,000 arrests made last year.
